Interventricular Septum

The interventricular septum is the muscular and membranous wall that separates the left and right ventricles of the heart, helping maintain distinct pulmonary and systemic circulations. During cardiac development, its components form and fuse to close the connection between the ventricles; after birth, coordinated contraction of the septal muscle contributes to efficient ventricular pumping while preventing blood mixing under normal conditions. Its structure and motion are central to cardiac anatomy, echocardiographic assessment, and the diagnosis of congenital defects such as ventricular septal defects, as well as conditions that alter ventricular pressure, geometry, or electrical conduction.

Here, we describe an improvement of the semi-in vitro (SIV) method for observing pollen tube guidance and reception in Arabidopsis thaliana, which increases the receptivity of ovules. The high-throughput SIV cum septum method may be coupled with gametophyte marker lines and genetically encoded biosensors to monitor the dynamic process of fertilization.

Fetal and perinatal death is a common feature when studying genetic alterations affecting cardiac development. High-frequency ultrasound imaging has improved 2-D resolution and can provide excellent information on early cardiac development and is an ideal method to detect the impact on cardiac structure and function prior to death.
