Ketogenesis

Ketogenesis is the metabolic process that produces ketone bodies from fatty acids when carbohydrate availability is low, providing an alternative energy source for tissues. In liver mitochondria, fasting, prolonged exercise, or carbohydrate restriction stimulates fatty acid oxidation, generating acetyl-CoA that is converted into acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, and acetone; these molecules then enter the bloodstream for use elsewhere. Ketogenesis helps maintain energy supply during prolonged fasting and supports brain metabolism when glucose is limited. Studying this pathway is important in biology, nutrition, and medicine, including research on metabolic adaptation, ketogenic diets, and abnormal ketone accumulation in diabetic ketoacidosis.

A novel Upflow Anaerobic Solid State (UASS) reactor was used for biogas production from fibrous feedstock. Digestate from UASS reactor was hydrothermally carbonized into HTC biochar in a pressurized batch reactor. The integration of the two bioenergy concepts was applied in this study to increase overall bioenergy production.
