Kidney Size

Kidney size is a biological characteristic that reflects the dimensions, structure, and developmental state of the kidneys, paired organs that maintain fluid, electrolyte, and waste balance. It is shaped by genetic factors, age, body size, developmental processes, and physiological workload, while disease can cause enlargement or reduced growth through changes in tissue, blood flow, or filtration structures. Assessing kidney size with imaging and anatomical measurements helps biologists and clinicians evaluate normal development, identify structural abnormalities, and monitor conditions such as chronic kidney disease. Understanding these size differences also supports comparative biology and research on renal function.

The Anchoring-and-Adjustment Heuristic

In order to make good decisions, we use our knowledge and our reasoning. Often, this knowledge and reasoning is sound and solid. However, sometimes, we are swayed by biases or by others manipulating a situation. For example, let’s say you and three friends wanted to rent a house and had a combined target budget of $1,600. The realtor shows you only very run-down houses for $1,600 and then shows you a very nice house for $2,000. Might you ask each person to pay more in rent to get the $2,000...

Kidney Structure

The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries. The renal cortex is the thick outer layer of the kidney. It...
