Lesion Extension

Lesion extension is the measurable enlargement of a localized area of tissue damage over time, providing an indicator of disease progression or injury severity. The lesion boundary advances when damaging influences, such as continued cellular injury, inflammation, or pathogen activity, affect neighboring tissue; researchers track this change by comparing lesion area or diameter at defined time points. In biology, lesion-extension measurements help characterize host responses, evaluate disease resistance, and assess how experimental treatments alter tissue damage. Standardized imaging and quantitative analysis make the approach useful for comparing organisms, conditions, and outcomes across studies.

Proboscis extension response or PER is a taste behavior assay that has been used in flies as well as in honeybees. When the proboscis makes contact with an attractive substance, the fly extends its proboscis to consume the substance. Solutions of various sugars are very attractive to the fly.

Using a Macrophage Conditioned Medium to Promote Neuron Extensions

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for promoting the growth of neuron projections known as neurite outgrowth using the macrophage-conditioned medium. Co-culture neurons and macrophages with cAMP and harvest the macrophage-derived conditioned medium. Growing the neurons with the conditioned medium promotes neurite outgrowths. These outgrowths are fluorescently labeled and visualized using a fluorescence microscope.

Sectioning Mammary Gland Whole Mounts for Lesion Identification

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.

Comparative Lesions Analysis Through a Targeted Sequencing Approach

This article describes a method to identify clonal and subclonal alterations among different specimens from a given patient. Although the experiments described here focus on a specific tumor type, the approach is broadly applicable to other solid tumors.

Initiating Rapid Neurite Extension and Formation Functional Neuronal Connections

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for the rapid initiation and extension of a neuron and creation of new connections with a target neuron using a microfluidic device and micromanipulation. This could be used for therapies that aim to reconnect neuronal circuits after trauma or in neurodegenerative diseases.
