Lesser Cornua

Lesser cornua are small, horn-shaped projections of the hyoid bone in the neck that contribute to the support and movement of structures involved in swallowing and speech. Each projection extends upward from the junction of the hyoid body and greater cornu, provides attachment for the stylohyoid ligament, and serves as an anchoring site for muscles that stabilize the hyoid apparatus. In biology and human anatomy, the lesser cornua help explain coordinated tongue, laryngeal, and pharyngeal movement. Their position and attachments are also relevant to anatomical variation, physical examination, and interpretation of injuries or imaging studies of the neck.

Atomic Radii and Effective Nuclear Charge

The elements in groups of the periodic table exhibit similar chemical behavior. This similarity occurs because the members of a group have the same number and distribution of electrons in their valence shells. Going across a period from left to right, a proton is added to the nucleus and an electron to the valence shell with each successive element. Going down the elements in a group, the number of electrons in the valence shell remains constant, but the principal quantum number increases by...

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The foot is a complex structure composed of numerous bones and articulations. It provides flexibility, is the essential contact point needed for ambulation, and is uniquely suited to absorb shock. Because the foot must support the weight of the entire body, it is prone to injury and pain. When examining the foot, it is important to remove shoes and socks on both sides, so that the entire foot can be inspected and compared.
