Fluoride Hydroxyapatite

Fluoride hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate mineral in which fluoride ions replace some hydroxyl ions within hydroxyapatite, the primary inorganic component of bones and tooth enamel. This ionic substitution creates a more stable crystal lattice with lower solubility under acidic conditions, helping enamel resist mineral loss during bacterial acid production and supporting remineralization when fluoride is available. In biology and dental research, fluoride hydroxyapatite is used to explain fluoride’s protective effects, evaluate preventive treatments, and develop biomimetic materials for enamel repair, bone substitutes, and other biomedical applications. Its formation and stability also provide insight into mineralized tissue structure and disease prevention.

We describe an efficient method to separate single-stranded DNA, double-stranded DNA and RNA molecules from environmental viral communities. Nucleic acids are fractionated using hydroxyapatite chromatography with increasing concentrations of phosphate-containing buffers. This method permits the isolation of all viral nucleic acid types from environmental samples.

The synthesis of fluorine-18 (18F) labeled radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography typically requires months of experience. When incorporated into a radiotracer, the silicon-fluoride acceptor (SiFA) motif enables a simple 18F-labeling protocol that is independent of costly equipment and preparatory training, while reducing precursor quantity needed and utilizing milder reaction conditions.
