Light-dark Arena

The light-dark arena is a behavioral assay that evaluates exploratory behavior and anxiety-related responses by offering an animal access to illuminated and dark, enclosed compartments. It relies on the conflict between rodents’ innate preference for shelter and their motivation to investigate a novel environment, with behavior quantified through measures such as time spent in each compartment, transitions, and exploratory activity. In biology, the assay helps characterize behavioral phenotypes, assess responses to environmental or genetic changes, and screen potential anxiolytic compounds. Because locomotion can influence performance, movement levels and experimental conditions are typically considered when interpreting results.
