Lipid Mixture Preparation

Lipid mixture preparation is the controlled combining of selected lipids to create a formulation with defined composition and properties for biological research. Researchers dissolve lipids in a compatible solvent, combine them in measured proportions, and remove the solvent before rehydration or further processing, allowing the molecules to organize into structures such as lipid bilayers, vesicles, or other membrane models. These preparations support studies of membrane structure, protein–lipid interactions, transport, signaling, and drug delivery, while careful control of lipid identity, concentration, and handling improves reproducibility across experiments.

The pH of a solution containing an acid can be determined using its acid dissociation constant and its initial concentration. If a solution contains two different acids, then its pH can be determined using one of several methods depending upon the relative strength of the acids and their dissociation constants. A Mixture of a Strong Acid and a Weak Acid In a mixture of a strong acid and a weak acid, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions...

We report on a smart application of carbon nanotubes for kinetic stabilization of lipid particles that contain self-assembled nanostructures in their cores. The preparation of lipid particles requires rather low concentrations of carbon nanotubes permitting their use in biomedical applications such as drug delivery.

Membrane lipid diversity in structure and composition is an important contributor to cellular processes and can be a marker of disease. Molecular dynamics simulations allow us to study membranes and their interactions with biomolecules at atomistic resolution. Here, we provide a protocol to build, run, and analyze complex membrane systems.

This protocol describes an extrusion method for preparing lipid vesicles of sub-micron sizes with a high degree of homogeneity. This method uses a pressure-controlled system with controlled nitrogen flow rates for liposome preparation. The lipid preparation1,2, liposome extrusion, and size characterization will be presented herein.

Separation of Mixtures via Precipitation

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Ana J. García-Sáez — University of Tübingen Most samples of interest are mixtures of many different components. Sample preparation, a key step in the analytical process, removes interferences that may affect the analysis. As such, developing separation techniques is an important endeavor not just in academia, but also in industry. One way to separate mixtures is to use their solubility properties. In this short paper, we will deal with aqueous solutions. The...
