Liver Capsule

The liver capsule is a thin layer of dense connective tissue that surrounds the liver, helping preserve its shape and protect the underlying parenchyma. Composed mainly of collagen and elastic fibers, it conforms to the organ’s surface and extends inward with connective tissue around portal tracts, supporting blood vessels, bile ducts, and lobular organization. In biology and medicine, understanding the liver capsule provides an anatomical framework for studying liver structure, enlargement, inflammation, fibrosis, and tumors. Because stretching or irritation of the capsule can contribute to discomfort, its condition also helps explain symptoms associated with hepatomegaly and other liver disorders.

This protocol describes a laparoscopic anatomical right anterior sectionectomy utilizing the Laennec capsule concept, combined with comprehensive preoperative therapy. The approach enables precise tumor resection in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cases closely associated with major vascular structures, improving surgical safety, efficacy, and long-term patient outcomes.

Separation of Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient

Source: Feltwell, T., et.al. Separating Bacteria by Capsule Amount Using a Discontinuous Density Gradient. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the use of a discontinuous density gradient to separate bacterial strains based on capsule amount. By centrifuging a transposon mutant library through the gradient, bacteria with different capsule densities localize to distinct layers. The separated fractions can then be collected for downstream analysis.

DiRita1 1 Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, United States of America Bacteria are diverse microorganisms found nearly everywhere on Earth. Many properties help distinguish them from each other, including but not limited to Gram-staining type, shape and arrangement, production of capsule, and formation of spores. To observe these properties, one...
