Liver Protein Metabolism

Liver protein metabolism is the set of processes by which the liver breaks down amino acids and uses their components to maintain protein balance, produce energy, and dispose of nitrogen. Hepatocytes transfer or remove amino groups through transamination and deamination; the resulting ammonia enters the urea cycle, where it is converted to urea for safe excretion, while carbon skeletons support glucose or energy production. The liver also synthesizes major plasma proteins, including albumin and many coagulation factors. Understanding these pathways helps explain nutrition, liver disease, blood chemistry, and the effects of impaired nitrogen handling on whole-body physiology.

Mouse model of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) with metabolic dysfunction, hepatic gene expression changes, and liver histopathological alterations that resemble human MASLD, including fibrosis that progresses to advanced fibrosis stage 3. This model can be used in studies of MASLD pathophysiology and in pre-clinical studies of new therapies.

Overview of Protein Metabolism

2024

Proteins are broken down into amino acids during digestion. Unlike fats and carbohydrates, which are stored for later use, proteins are not. Instead, amino acids are either used to produce ATP through oxidation or contribute to the creation of new proteins for the growth and repair of the body. Any surplus amino acids from the diet are converted into glucose or triglycerides rather than excreted. Amino acids play various roles in the body once they are absorbed into cells. They are restructured...

Here we present a protocol describing oxygenated ex situ machine perfusion of donor liver grafts. This article contains a step by step protocol to procure and prepare the liver graft for machine perfusion, prepare the perfusion fluid, prime the perfusion machine and perform oxygenated normothermic machine perfusion of the liver graft.

What is Metabolism?

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. Metabolism Is the Sum of All of the Chemical Reactions That Take Place in an Organism
