Luminometer Detection

Luminometer detection is a method for measuring very low levels of light produced by chemical or biological reactions, making it valuable for sensitive analysis in biology. A luminometer collects emitted photons in a light-tight chamber and converts them into an electrical signal, often using a photomultiplier tube or similar detector; in luciferase assays, enzyme-catalyzed oxidation of a substrate generates light proportional to the reaction or target activity. Researchers use this approach to quantify ATP, monitor gene expression with reporter proteins, measure enzyme activity, and detect cellular responses. Its high sensitivity supports applications in molecular biology, drug screening, diagnostics, and environmental analysis.

A simple method for the identification of priority bacterial pathogens is to use genetically engineered reporter phage. These reporter phage, which are specific to their particular host species, are capable of rapidly transducing a bioluminescent signal response to host cells. Herein, we describe the use of reporter phage for the detection of Yersinia pestis.

An In Vitro Recombinant Virus Reporter System for the Detection of Viral Infection

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection via a recombinant HBV reporter system. Upon infecting host cells, the recombinant viral genome expresses the luciferase reporter enzyme, which produces bioluminescence upon oxidizing its substrate — helping detect viral infection.
