Meiotic Recombination Proteins

Meiotic recombination proteins are specialized factors that repair, exchange, and regulate DNA during meiosis, the cell division that produces genetically diverse gametes. They create or process programmed DNA double-strand breaks, promote homologous chromosome pairing and strand exchange, and help resolve recombination intermediates into crossovers or noncrossover products. Their coordinated activity supports accurate chromosome segregation while reshuffling genetic information between parental chromosomes. Studying these proteins clarifies the molecular basis of inheritance, fertility, genome stability, and genetic variation, and helps researchers investigate causes of meiotic errors, infertility, and chromosome abnormalities.

Meiosis is the developmental process by which gametes are formed through a single round of DNA replication and two successive rounds of chromosome segregation. Mammalian meiosis can be examined by utilizing a technique to prepare meiotic chromosome spreads. Here, we demonstrate a method of preparing surface-spread nuclei from mouse spermatocytes.
