Metaphase Anaphase Transition

The metaphase-anaphase transition is the cell-cycle switch that converts chromosome alignment into the separation of sister chromatids during mitosis, ensuring accurate inheritance of genetic material. After the spindle assembly checkpoint is satisfied, the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) targets securin for degradation, releasing separase to cleave cohesin proteins that hold sister chromatids together. This coordinated transition also promotes changes in spindle forces and chromosome movement toward opposite poles. Studying the metaphase-anaphase transition helps explain how cells maintain chromosome stability and how failures in checkpoint control or cohesin removal can produce aneuploidy, a feature associated with developmental disorders and cancer.

Microtubules form through the end-to-end polymerization of tubulin heterodimers. Kinetochore microtubules originate from the spindle poles, and their plus-ends connect with the kinetochores on sister-chromatids. Ndc80 protein complexes, present on the kinetochore, form low-affinity links with the plus end of these kinetochore microtubules. Plus-end depolymerization releases tubulin heterodimers from the terminal region of the microtubule. As tubulin subunits are lost, the Ndc80 complexes detach...

The stepwise destruction of specific proteins is necessary for the progression and completion of the cell cycle. Such proteins are ubiquitinated by ubiquitin ligases and then subsequently destroyed by the proteasome. The SCF (Skp1/Cullin/F-box) and the anaphase-promoting complex (APC) are two important ubiquitin ligases involved in cell cycle progression. While SCF is active throughout the cell cycle, APC gets activated during metaphase to anaphase transition. Cdc20 or Cdh1 binds to APC and...

Whether solid, liquid, or gas, a substance's state depends on the order and arrangement of its particles (atoms, molecules, or ions). Particles in the solid pack closely together, generally in a pattern. The particles vibrate about their fixed positions but do not move or squeeze past their neighbors. In liquids, although the particles are closely spaced, they are randomly arranged. The position of the particles are not fixed—that is, they are free to move past their neighbors to occupy...
