Miniature Incision Surgery

Miniature incision surgery is a minimally invasive surgical approach that uses very small openings to access and treat internal tissues while limiting disruption to surrounding structures. Surgeons typically guide slender instruments, cameras, or specialized devices through these openings, using direct visualization to perform procedures with less tissue separation than conventional open surgery. In biology and biomedical research, the technique supports studies of tissue repair, organ function, and surgical responses while helping evaluate how incision size influences inflammation, healing, pain, and recovery. Its controlled access can also improve experimental consistency and inform the development of safer procedures for clinical use.

2025

We introduced an optimized surgical approach for small incision lenticule extraction, termed the Ye's Swing Technique. This technique enables the surgeon to perform lenticule separation and extraction more easily while minimizing the risk of incision-edge tears and lenticule fragmentation. The results of this study proved its safety and efficacy.

Robot-assisted natural orifice specimen extraction surgery is a minimally invasive technique that combines robotic precision with natural orifice specimen extraction. A 67-year-old patient successfully underwent the procedure in 290 min, with minimal bleeding and no residual cancer. This approach minimized abdominal trauma, reduced complications, and enabled a quick recovery.

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals1 dictates that rodent survival surgery be performed aseptically. Aseptic technique utilizes specific practices that minimize the contamination of the surgical site, including patient preparation, surgeon preparation, sterilization of instruments and other supplies, and the use of a clean and controlled environment. Presurgical planning,...

The monitoring of extracellular neurotransmitter levels in distinct brain regions of freely moving animals offers insights on the link between neurotransmitter release and behavior. In vivo microdialysis coupled with electrochemical detection provides excellent anatomical and chemical resolution; and information on how basal neurotransmission is altered by pharmacological or physiological manipulations.
