Molecular Analyses

Molecular analyses are laboratory approaches used to identify, measure, and characterize biological molecules, revealing how cells function and respond to change. Depending on the question, researchers extract nucleic acids or proteins, separate or amplify target molecules, and detect them through methods such as polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, sequencing, spectroscopy, or mass spectrometry. In biology, these analyses connect molecular structure and abundance with gene expression, protein activity, genetic variation, and cellular pathways. They support research in genetics, microbiology, developmental biology, disease investigation, and biotechnology, while enabling precise comparisons among cells, organisms, and experimental conditions.

Carcinogenesis is a process involving interactions between cancer cells and the cancer microenvironment. To dissect the molecular events, one needs to isolate different cell populations at different stages during cancer development. Using a mouse model for basal cell carcinoma, we describe a protocol for cell analyses during carcinogenesis.

Molecular Cloning

2023

Molecular cloning is a set of methods, which are used to insert recombinant DNA into a vector - a carrier of DNA molecules that will replicate recombinant DNA fragments in host organisms. The DNA fragment, which may be a gene, can be isolated from a prokaryotic or eukaryotic specimen. Following isolation of the fragment of interest, or insert, both the vector and insert must be cut with restriction enzymes and purified. The purified pieces are joined together though a technique called...
