Monopolar Emg Recording

Monopolar EMG recording is a technique for measuring the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscle, providing a direct view of neuromuscular function. It uses an active electrode inserted into or placed near the muscle and a reference electrode positioned at a relatively electrically inactive site; the system records voltage differences generated when motor units are activated. In biology, these signals help characterize muscle recruitment, motor unit action potentials, nerve–muscle communication, and changes in activity during movement or stimulation. Monopolar EMG supports research on muscle physiology and neuromuscular disorders, while also informing experimental models of motor control and rehabilitation.

Development of an effective brain-machine-interface (BMI) system for restoration and rehabilitation of bipedal locomotion requires accurate decoding of user's intent. Here we present a novel experimental protocol and data collection technique for simultaneous non-invasive acquisition of neural activity, muscle activity, and whole-body kinematics during various locomotion tasks and conditions.
