Mouse Blood Sampling

Mouse blood sampling is the controlled collection of blood from laboratory mice for hematological, biochemical, immunological, or pharmacological analysis. Depending on the study design and required volume, researchers use methods such as tail-vein, saphenous-vein, or retro-orbital collection, applying appropriate restraint, aseptic technique, and post-collection hemostasis while limiting blood loss. Samples can be processed as whole blood, plasma, or serum to measure cell populations, metabolites, antibodies, hormones, and drug concentrations. Careful method selection and standardized handling improve data quality, reduce animal stress, and support ethical, reproducible research in biology and biomedical science.

A procedure for making en face preparations of the mouse carotid artery and aorta is described. Such preparations, when immunofluorescently stained with specific antibodies, enable us to study localization of proteins and identification of cell types within the entire vascular wall by confocal microscopy.

CTC Isolation from a Whole Blood Sample: A Method to Obtain CTCs from Murine Colorectal Cancer Model

This video describes a detailed protocol for isolating circulating tumor cells from the whole blood sample of a euthanized colorectal tumor mouse model. These isolated CTCs can be cultured and used for intended downstream analysis.

Detection of Rhesus Factor in Human Blood Samples using Magnetic Levitation

2025

This video demonstrates the detection of the Rhesus (Rh) factor in blood samples using a magnetic levitation instrument. The magnetic field aligns and levitates beads and blood cells based on density. Treating the samples with anti-Rh antibodies results in intermediate-density bead-cell complexes' formation, allowing for the differentiation of Rh-positive and Rh-negative red blood cells.
