Mu Beta Frequency Bands

Mu and beta frequency bands are ranges of neural oscillations measured with electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), especially over sensorimotor brain regions. The mu rhythm typically occupies the alpha range near 8–13 Hz, while beta activity commonly spans about 13–30 Hz; movement or motor imagery can reduce their power through event-related desynchronization, followed by a postmovement rebound. These patterns provide noninvasive indicators of motor planning, execution, and recovery. Researchers use mu and beta activity to study sensorimotor function, develop brain-computer interfaces, and investigate neurological conditions that alter movement or cortical communication.

Evaluating Mutation Frequency in Bacteria Using the Beta-Glucosidase Assay

Source: Stefan, A., et al. The Multifaceted Benefits of Protein Co-expression in Escherichia coli. J. Vis. Exp. (96), (2015).This video demonstrates the evaluation of mutation frequency in bacteria using a beta-glucosidase assay. Bacterial cultures expressing a proofreading-deficient DNA polymerase are collected over successive generations. Replication errors caused by reduced proofreading may activate a suppressed beta-glucosidase gene. After centrifugation and permeabilization, a substrate is...

Band Theory

When two or more atoms come together to form a molecule, their atomic orbitals combine and molecular orbitals of distinct energies result. In a solid, there are a large number of atoms, and therefore a large number of atomic orbitals that may be combined into molecular orbitals. These groups of molecular orbitals are so closely placed together to form continuous regions of energies, known as the bands. The energy difference between these bands is known as the band gap. Conductor, Semiconductor,...

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the brainstem and its neurons are maximally activated during waking and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep brain states. This work describes the experimental approach to record in vitro gamma band subthreshold membrane oscillation in PPN neurons.

Beta

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...
