Mucus Clearance

Mucus clearance is the biological removal of mucus and trapped particles from the surfaces of the respiratory and other mucous membranes, helping protect tissues from pathogens and debris. In the airways, coordinated beating of cilia moves a hydrated mucus layer toward the throat, where it can be swallowed or expelled by coughing; adequate hydration and mucus properties support this process. Efficient clearance is essential for respiratory defense, while impaired ciliary motion, excessive mucus production, or dehydration can promote infection and airway obstruction. Studying mucus clearance helps explain conditions such as cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchitis and informs therapies that restore airway function.

Hepatic Drug Clearance: Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clearance

2025

Hepatic clearance refers to the volume of blood cleared of a drug by the liver per unit of time. It plays a crucial role in drug metabolism and elimination. While hepatic clearance is commonly estimated by subtracting renal clearance from total body clearance, other pathways, such as pulmonary or biliary clearance, may also contribute. However, these pathways are generally less significant than hepatic and renal clearance. Most drugs undergo restrictive clearance, which is proportional to the...

Here we describe an effective method for studying dynamics of apoptotic cell clearance in vivo. This method employs live Drosophila embryos as a powerful model for monitoring phagocytosis of apoptotic cells using specific labeling of apoptotic cells and phagocytes.

Renal Clearance

The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a critical marker of kidney function, reflecting the efficiency of filtration by the glomeruli. Renal clearance of specific substances, such as inulin or creatinine, is commonly used to measure GFR. Renal clearance refers to the volume of plasma cleared of a specific substance, such as creatinine, per unit of time. To measure clearance, urine samples are collected over a 24-hour period during each bladder voiding, followed by a single blood sample at the...

Take pig kidney cell cultures, with one culture pre-treated with an inhibitor that increases lysosomal pH, impairing autophagic-lysosomal degradation.Add pathogenic bacteria and centrifuge to enhance host-pathogen contact.Incubate to allow bacterial invasion and internalization into endocytic vesicles. The internalized bacteria consume host nutrients to replicate, triggering metabolic stress. This stress activates autophagy, where an autophagic membrane expands around the vesicle, forming an...
