Nano-electrospray Source

A nano-electrospray source is a low-flow ionization device that converts liquid samples into gas-phase ions for mass spectrometric analysis, enabling sensitive measurement of biological molecules. It applies a high voltage to a solution delivered through a fine emitter, forming a Taylor cone and a plume of charged droplets; solvent evaporation and repeated droplet fission release analyte ions into the mass spectrometer. In biology, nano-electrospray supports proteomics, metabolomics, and the characterization of peptides, proteins, lipids, and other biomolecules from limited samples. Its low sample consumption and efficient ion transfer improve detection of complex biological mixtures and facilitate molecular identification.

We describe a new quantitative lipidomics method for identifying numerous lipid species in yeast using survey-scan electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI/MS). This method exceeds currently available methods for lipid identification and quantification in the ability to resolve various molecular forms of lipids, sensitivity, and speed.

A mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) source operated at atmospheric pressure was developed by coupling mid-infrared laser desorption and electrospray post-ionization. Exogenous ice matrix was used as the energy-absorbing matrix to facilitate resonant desorption of tissue-related material. This manuscript provides a step-by-step protocol for performing IR-MALDESI MSI of whole-body neonatal mouse.

We describe the experimental method to deposit nanostructured oxide thin films by nanosecond Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) in the presence of a background gas. By using this method Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films, from compact to hierarchically structured as nano-tree forests, can be deposited.
