Net Production Efficiency

Net production efficiency is a biological measure of how effectively an organism converts assimilated energy into new biomass after accounting for metabolic costs. Energy obtained from food is absorbed and allocated among growth, reproduction, storage, respiration, and waste; net production efficiency reflects the proportion remaining for growth and other forms of production, often expressed as production divided by assimilated energy. In biology and ecology, this measure helps compare energy use among organisms, evaluate trophic energy transfer, and interpret patterns of population growth. It also supports ecological modeling by linking individual metabolism with productivity across food webs and ecosystems.

Net production efficiency (NPE) is the efficiency at which organisms assimilate energy into biomass for the next trophic level. Due to low metabolic rates and less energy spent on thermoregulatory processes, the NPE of ectotherms (cold-blooded animals) is 10 times higher than endotherms (warm-blooded animals). Net Production Efficiency Energy flows through ecosystems, from one organism to the next. However, only the energy stored in an organism as biomass is available as food for the next...

Here we describe a protocol based only on cell infection, which improves the efficiency of recombinant parvovirus production by more than 100 fold in comparison to other protocols in use. This protocol relies on the use of a novel adenovirus 5-based helper containing the parvovirus VP transcription unit (Ad-VP).

Here, we present a protocol for adenovirus production using the pAdEasy system. The technology includes the recombination of the pAdTrack and pAdEasy-1 plasmids, the adenovirus packaging and amplification, the purification of the adenoviral particles from cell lysate and culture medium, the viral titration, and the functional testing of the adenovirus.

Input Efficiency: Production Contract Curve

2025

The Production Contract CurveThe production contract curve represents a set of Pareto-efficient allocations of inputs—such as capital and labor—between two producers when the total available resources are fully allocated. Each point on the curve shows an allocation where it is impossible to reallocate inputs to increase one producer’s output without reducing the other’s. This means that resources are being used efficiently, ensuring that no mutually beneficial trades remain.Understanding...

Here, we describe a rapid and flexible protocol for the formation of 3D cell spheroids through cell aggregation. This is easily adapted to multiple cell types and is suitable for use in a variety of applications including cell migration, invasion, or anoikis assays, and for imaging and quantifying cell-matrix interactions.
