Noninvasive Fluorescence Monitoring

Noninvasive fluorescence monitoring is a biological imaging and measurement approach that tracks fluorescent signals in living systems without removing tissue or disrupting the subject. Fluorophores or genetically encoded reporters absorb excitation light and emit longer-wavelength light, which external detectors collect over time to indicate the location or activity of labeled cells, molecules, or physiological processes. In biology, this method supports longitudinal studies of gene expression, cell behavior, disease progression, and treatment responses while reducing sampling damage. Its ability to provide repeated measurements from the same system improves temporal analysis and can complement invasive assays and endpoint microscopy.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Presented here is a protocol to measure renal oxygenation in the medulla and noninvasive urine oxygen partial pressure in a hemorrhagic shock porcine model to establish urine oxygen partial pressure as an early indicator of acute kidney injury (AKI) and a novel resuscitative endpoint.

Fluorescence-Based Monitoring of Mitochondrial Stress in Astrocytes

2025

This video demonstrates the evaluation of mitochondrial health in genetically modified astrocytes, which express a fluorescent protein within their mitochondria. The protein helps to track changes in mitochondrial health as its fluorescence changes from green to red, indicating stress or damage. Images are captured and analyzed using various parameters.

Using Fluorescent Proteins to Monitor Glycosome Dynamics in the African Trypanosome

Glycosome dynamics in African trypanosomes are difficult to study by traditional cell biology techniques such as electron and fluorescence microscopy. As a means of observing dynamic organelle behavior, a fluorescent-organelle reporter system has been used in conjunction with flow cytometry to monitor real-time glycosome dynamics in live parasites.
