Nonpoint-source Pollution

Nonpoint-source pollution is contamination that enters waterways from diffuse, widespread origins rather than a single identifiable discharge, making it a major challenge for aquatic biology and water-quality management. Rainfall and snowmelt can wash fertilizers, pesticides, sediment, oil, nutrients, and pathogens from agricultural fields, urban surfaces, and disturbed land into streams, lakes, and coastal waters. These pollutants can reduce water clarity, trigger eutrophication and harmful algal growth, alter dissolved oxygen, and disrupt aquatic communities. Biologists and environmental managers use watershed monitoring, source tracking, conservation practices, and stormwater controls to identify risks and reduce impacts on freshwater ecosystems and human water supplies.

Source: Villela, H. D. M., et al. Prospecting Microbial Strains for Bioremediation and Probiotics Development for Metaorganism Research and Preservation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the isolation of pollutant-degrading marine bacteria through serial dilution, colony selection, and growth in EE2-containing medium. By using EE2 as the sole carbon source, the protocol identifies bacterial strains capable of metabolizing this environmental pollutant.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Misinformation & Source Credibility

2026

The rapid expansion of online information has increased access to knowledge while also increasing the risk of misinformation. Sources that appear authoritative may lack scholarly rigor, which makes credibility assessment a critical part of research literacy. Evaluating the reliability of information helps prevent the inclusion of weak, biased, or misleading material in academic work. Publication Source and Authorship A primary consideration is the publication source. Scholarly journals and...
