Nucleotide Substitution

Nucleotide substitution is a genetic change in which one nucleotide, or its complementary base pair, is replaced by another, potentially altering biological information. These variants arise through DNA replication errors, chemical or environmental damage, or imperfect repair, and are classified as transitions or transversions; depending on their location and codon effect, they may be synonymous, missense, or nonsense changes. In biology, analyzing nucleotide substitutions helps researchers track evolution, identify disease-associated variants, interpret genome sequences, and study how mutations influence protein structure and cellular function. Experimental substitution methods also support functional genomics and targeted genetic research.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Nucleophilic substitution reactions are among the most fundamental topics covered in organic chemistry. A nucleophilic substitution reaction is one where a nucleophile (electron-rich Lewis base) replaces a leaving group from a carbon atom. SN1 (S = Substitution, N = Nucleophilic, 1 = first-order kinetics) SN2 (S = Substitution, N = Nucleophilic, 2 = second-order kinetics) This video will help to...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual masking is a term used by perceptual scientists to refer to a wide range of phenomena in which in an image is presented but not perceived by an observer because of the presentation of a second image. There are several different kinds of masking, many of them relatively intuitive and unsurprising. But one surprising and important type of masking is called Object Substitution Masking. It has been a focus of research in vision...

Chip-in-a-Tube-Based Digital PCR for Quantification of Single Nucleotide Variants

2025

This video demonstrates the utility of digital PCR in a chip-in-a-tube format for the detection of single nucleotide variations in DNA samples. A single PCR reaction is partitioned into chambers that act as independent PCR reactions, and the detection of fluorescence signals from the amplified targets in the chambers is used to compute the frequency of the variant allele in the sample.

Trigonometric Substitution

Trigonometric substitution is a technique used to simplify integrals that contain square root expressions involving quadratic forms. It is particularly effective when the integrand includes terms resembling those found in standard geometric equations, such as circles or ellipses.Molniya satellites follow highly elliptical orbits, repeatedly sweeping out the same regions of space as they revolve around Earth. To estimate the area enclosed by such an orbit, the path is modeled as an ellipse...

Rationalizing Substitutions

Integrals involving non-rational functions are often difficult to evaluate using standard techniques, especially when radicals appear in the integrand. Rationalizing substitution provides a systematic method for simplifying such integrals by converting them into rational forms that are easier to handle.Consider a rod whose linear mass density depends on a constant linear density, a characteristic length, and the distance from the left end of the rod. Determining the total mass requires...
