Operative Time

Operative time is the duration required to perform a surgical procedure, making it an important measure of procedural efficiency, patient exposure, and healthcare resource use. In biological and surgical studies, researchers typically record the interval from the initial incision to wound closure, although protocols may also define it by specific operative milestones. Comparing operative time across procedures, treatments, or experimental groups can reveal effects of surgical technique, tissue complexity, operator experience, and intervention design. These measurements support evaluation of anesthesia and recovery requirements, identification of factors associated with complications, and refinement of protocols in preclinical and clinical research.

Operating the Glovebox

2023

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A glovebox is an isolated enclosure that is designed to maintain an inert atmosphere. The manipulation of chemicals or apparatus is done via the use of gloves, which allow operation while still maintaining an inert atmosphere. A positive pressure is utilized to compensate for any passive leaks. Objects can be transferred in and out of the box using an antechamber that acts as an airlock between the box...

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.

Operation of High-pressure Reactor Vessels

Robert M Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The use of gases in a synthetic chemistry laboratory is essential for carrying out a variety of highly facile and atom economical transformations. Reactions such as hydrogenation, oxidation, and amination require the use of gases like hydrogen, oxygen, and ammonia. Due to the poor solubility of these gases in typical reactant solutions, high pressures are necessary to achieve a meaningful reaction rate. Not only are these gases...

Operating Cycle

2025

The operating cycle is a critical measure of a company's efficiency in managing its resources and cash flow. It reflects how quickly a business can convert its investments in inventory and receivables into cash. The operating cycle influences a company's need for working capital. A longer cycle increases the requirement for working capital to sustain daily operations. For example, if a wholesaler experiences delays in receiving payments from retailers, it may need to seek short-term financing...
