Orthotopic Kidney Transplantation

Orthotopic kidney transplantation is a surgical procedure that replaces a failing kidney by positioning a donor kidney in the recipient’s native renal fossa, preserving the anatomical location of the original organ. Surgeons connect the graft’s renal artery and vein to nearby blood vessels and attach its ureter to the urinary tract, allowing blood filtration and urine drainage; immunosuppressive therapy helps limit rejection. Unlike the more common placement in the iliac fossa, orthotopic transplantation may be selected when native kidney removal, abnormal pelvic vasculature, or other anatomical considerations influence surgical planning. The procedure provides a biological model for studying renal function, transplantation biology, immune responses, and long-term graft survival.
