Parental Histone Distribution

Parental histone distribution is the process by which pre-existing histone proteins are recycled and partitioned onto newly replicated DNA, helping preserve chromatin organization and epigenetic information. During DNA replication, nucleosomes ahead of the replication fork are temporarily disassembled; parental H3–H4 complexes are transferred behind the fork, where histone chaperones and newly synthesized histones help reassemble nucleosomes on both daughter DNA molecules. Studying this process clarifies how cells maintain gene-regulatory states through cell division and how chromatin architecture is inherited. It is therefore important in research on development, genome stability, DNA repair, and diseases involving epigenetic dysregulation.

Histone Modification

2020

The histone proteins have a flexible N-terminal tail extending out from the nucleosome. These histone tails are often subjected to post-translational modifications such as acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination. Particular combinations of these modifications form “histone codes” that influence the chromatin folding and tissue-specific gene expression. Acetylation The enzyme histone acetyltransferase adds acetyl group to the histones. Another enzyme, histone deacetylase,...

Histone Variants at the Centromere

2020

Histone variants are the histone proteins with structural and sequence variations. These variants may be regarded as “mutant” forms that replace their canonical histone counterparts in the nucleosomes. Specific post-translational modifications on the histone variants enable further chromatin complexity and regulate tissue-specific gene expression. The most common histone variants are from histone H2A, H2B, and linker histone H1 families. However, several variants of histone H3 variants are also...

Parental Care

2026

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young. Birds Parental care can occur even before hatching in birds, when parents sit on their eggs to incubate them. After hatching, the parents provide food for their offspring, and may continue to...

Parenting Styles

Diana Baumrind's four parenting styles — authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive — each influence children's socio-emotional development differently. Authoritarian Parenting This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably. Authoritative Parenting This...
