Photolithography

Photolithography is a manufacturing technique that transfers micron-scale patterns onto a surface, making it important for creating precise structures in research and biotechnology. In a typical process, ultraviolet light passes through a photomask to expose selected regions of a light-sensitive photoresist; developing the resist removes either exposed or unexposed material, depending on its chemistry, and the remaining pattern guides etching or deposition. In biology, photolithography supports fabrication of microfluidic channels, biosensors, and cell-culture platforms that control fluid flow, gradients, and cellular positioning. These devices enable reproducible studies of cell behavior, diagnostics, tissue engineering, and drug responses.
