Photomultiplier Bead Tracking

Photomultiplier bead tracking is a fluorescence-based technique that follows microscopic beads to measure movement, interactions, or transport in biological systems. Fluorescent beads are excited by light, and their emitted photons are collected by a photomultiplier tube, which converts weak optical signals into electrical pulses that can be analyzed over time to determine bead position and motion. Researchers use this approach to study molecular motors, cytoskeletal dynamics, intracellular transport, and mechanical forces at the cellular or subcellular scale. Because photomultipliers provide high sensitivity and rapid signal detection, the method can reveal faint or fast movements that are difficult to resolve with conventional imaging.

2011

This article describes surface labeling and ex ovo tissue culture in the early chick embryo. Techniques amenable to time-lapse bright field, fluorescence, and optical coherence tomography imaging are presented. Tracking surface labels with high spatiotemporal resolution enables kinematic quantities such as morphogenetic strains (deformations) to be calculated in both two and three dimensions.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In a staggeringly complex and engaging world, it is crucial to selectively process some stimuli at the expense of others. Experimental psychologists call this ability attention. Specifically, visual attention refers to the ability to selectively process aspects of a visual scene. Many paradigms used to study visual attention involve brief, punctuated, and repeated trials. However, everyday situations often place sustained demands...
