Photosynthetic Pigments

Photosynthetic pigments are light-absorbing molecules that capture solar energy and initiate the conversion of light into chemical energy in plants, algae, and many photosynthetic microorganisms. Chlorophylls absorb specific wavelengths and transfer the resulting excitation energy to reaction centers, where electron transport drives the formation of ATP and reducing power; accessory pigments such as carotenoids broaden light absorption and help protect cells from photooxidative damage. Studying these pigments helps explain plant color, photosynthetic efficiency, and adaptation to different light environments. Their properties also support research in plant physiology, ecology, crop improvement, and bio-inspired solar-energy technologies.

Source: Shivaiah, K., et al. Plastoglobule Lipid Droplet Isolation from Plant Leaf Tissue and Cyanobacteria. J. Vis. Exp. (2022)The video demonstrates the isolation of plastoglobules from cyanobacteria. It begins with a culture of cyanobacteria and proceeds through cell disruption using mechanical force. The release of photosynthetic pigments indicates successful lysis. A sucrose step gradient is then used to separate cellular components by density, allowing low-density plastoglobules to form a...
