Phytoene Desaturase

Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is an enzyme in carotenoid biosynthesis, the pathway that produces pigments and photoprotective molecules in plants, algae, and some microorganisms. It converts colorless phytoene into more highly unsaturated carotenoids by introducing double bonds and transferring reducing equivalents to an electron acceptor in the plastid membrane. This reaction contributes to the formation of carotenoids such as ζ-carotene and downstream pigments that protect photosynthetic systems from excess light and oxidative damage. PDS is therefore important in studying plant pigmentation, photosynthesis, herbicide action, and genetic regulation of carotenoid metabolism, while PDS inhibition or gene disruption helps investigate plastid function and visible traits.
