Pmchl1 Pseudogene

A pseudogene is a DNA sequence that resembles a functional gene but has accumulated changes that usually prevent production of a functional protein. Pmchl1, or pro-melanin-concentrating hormone-like 1, is a pseudogene related to the gene encoding pro-melanin-concentrating hormone, and its sequence provides a record of gene duplication, divergence, or other evolutionary events. Comparing Pmchl1 with its functional relatives can help researchers identify disabling mutations, examine genomic organization, and distinguish coding genes from inactive gene copies. Such analysis contributes to understanding genome evolution, gene annotation, and the regulatory significance of noncoding or pseudogenic regions in biology.

We describe a sensitized method to identify postembryonic regulators of protein expression and localization in C. elegans using an RNAi-based genomic screen and an integrated transgene that expresses a functional, fluorescently tagged protein.
