Yellow Mouse Obesity

Yellow mouse obesity is an inherited obesity phenotype and experimental model in which mice with yellow coats develop excessive weight gain and related metabolic abnormalities. In the classic viable yellow agouti model, an upstream retrotransposon drives inappropriate, widespread expression of the agouti protein; this inhibits melanocortin signaling, alters appetite and energy balance, and promotes obesity, often alongside insulin resistance. Researchers use this model to study genetic and epigenetic regulation of body weight, including how DNA methylation near the agouti locus can influence coat color and disease susceptibility. Because the phenotype links a visible trait to endocrine and metabolic changes, yellow mice help evaluate mechanisms of obesity and potential interventions in biology.

Yellow Fever

Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease caused by the yellow fever virus (YFV), a member of the Flaviviridae family. It is transmitted primarily by Aedes and Haemagogus mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and South America. After transmission through a mosquito bite, the virus initially replicates in skin-resident immune cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages. These cells then migrate to the lymph nodes, where viral replication increases, eventually leading to...

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...
