Porcine Eye Dissection

Porcine eye dissection is a hands-on biological technique for examining the structure and organization of a pig eye, an accessible mammalian model for studying vision. During the procedure, students or researchers remove surrounding tissue, open the globe through controlled cuts, and identify components such as the cornea, sclera, lens, retina, and optic nerve; separating these tissues reveals how transparent, protective, focusing, and light-sensitive structures work together. The dissection supports anatomy and physiology education by linking form to visual function, while also providing a practical framework for comparative biology, microscopy, and investigations of ocular structure.
