Postoperative Care Protocol

A postoperative care protocol is a structured plan for supporting recovery after surgery, reducing complications, and assessing whether normal function is returning. It combines regular monitoring of vital signs and symptoms with wound assessment, pain control, infection prevention, fluid and nutrition management, and a gradual return to movement; clinicians adjust care according to the procedure and the patient’s response. In biology and biomedical research, postoperative protocols help standardize recovery studies, protect animal welfare, and produce consistent observations after experimental procedures. Careful documentation of healing, behavior, and complications also supports safer clinical practice and improves understanding of tissue repair and recovery.

Structured protocols are necessary to provide answers on research questions in critically ill patients. The Simple Intensive Care Studies (SICS) provides an infrastructure for repeated measurements in critically ill patients including clinical examination, biochemical analysis and ultrasonography. SICS projects have specific focus but the structure is flexible to other investigations.

The subretinal implantation of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) is one of the most promising approaches for the treatment of degenerative retinal diseases. However, the performance of preclinical studies on large-eye animal models remains challenging. This report presents guidelines for the subretinal transplantation of RPE on a cell carrier into minipigs.
