Pre-surgical Planning

Pre-surgical planning is the systematic preparation of a surgical procedure through patient evaluation, anatomical assessment, and selection of an appropriate operative strategy. It combines medical history, physical examination, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory findings to identify relevant structures, anticipate risks, and determine the sequence, instruments, or techniques required. In biology and biomedical research, this process supports precise interventions while accounting for tissue organization, physiological function, and individual variation. Effective planning can improve surgical accuracy, guide communication among clinical teams, reduce avoidable complications, and establish a basis for evaluating outcomes in procedures ranging from experimental animal models to human surgery.

Patient-specific models improve surgeon and fellow confidence when developing or learning surgical plans. Three-dimensional (3D) printers generate adequate detail for surgical preparation, but fail to replicate tissue haptic fidelity. A protocol is presented detailing the creation of patient-specific, silicone cardiac models, combining 3D printing precision with simulated silicone tissue.

A workflow for creating three-dimensional (3D) virtual hybrid models has been designed based on cone-beam computed tomography dataset and intraoral optical scans utilizing radiographic image segmentation methods and free-form surface modeling. Digital models are used for the virtual planning of reconstructive dentoalveolar surgical procedures.
