Quadrant Olfactometer

A quadrant olfactometer is a behavioral apparatus that measures how organisms respond to and choose among airborne chemical cues, making it useful for studying olfaction in biology. The device divides a test arena into four connected zones and delivers controlled, odorized or clean air through separate arms, allowing researchers to record movement, preference, attraction, or avoidance under defined airflow conditions. Quadrant olfactometers are used to investigate host-seeking, mate choice, foraging, predator avoidance, and chemical communication in insects and other small organisms. By linking odor exposure with quantifiable behavior, they support experiments in ecology, neurobiology, sensory physiology, and pest management.

We describe here a behavioral setup and data analysis method for assaying olfactory responses of up to 100 vinegar flies (Drosophila melanogaster). This system may be used with single or multiple olfactory stimuli, and adaptable for optogenetic activation or silencing of neuronal subsets.

Four-Way Olfactometer Assay: A Method to Assess Odorant-Cued Responses in Drosophila

2023

Fruit flies have a complex olfactory system, can discriminate hundreds of odorants, and use their sense of smell to direct behavioral decisions. This video describes the four-way olfactometer assay, a method to study olfactory behavioral responses in flies. The featured protocol clip shows how to handle test flies and what are critical steps while performing the assay.

This protocol describes the construction of an olfactometer for go/no-go olfactory behavior experiments. Step-by-step instructions, along with images, are provided to ensure the successful construction of the olfactometer. Information for troubleshooting issues encountered during the process is also included.

Abdominal Regions and Quadrants

2025

To promote clear communication, for instance, about the location of a patient's abdominal pain or a suspicious mass, anatomists and clinicians typically use imaginary lines to categorize the abdominopelvic cavity into either four quadrants or nine regions to identify organs in the cavity. The simpler quadrants approach, which is more commonly used in medicine, subdivides the cavity with one horizontal and one vertical line that intersects at the patient's umbilicus (navel). The four quadrants...

Combining a Breath-Synchronized Olfactometer with Brain Simulation to Study the Impact of Odors on Corticospinal Excitability and Effective Connectivity

This paper describes using a breath-synchronized olfactometer to trigger single- and dual-coil transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during odorant presentation synchronized to human nasal breathing. This combination allows us to objectively investigate how pleasant and unpleasant odors impact corticospinal excitability and brain-effective connectivity in a given individual.
