Residence Time

Residence time is the average length of time a substance, particle, or organism remains within a defined system before it is transformed, transported, or removed. In biology, it describes the persistence of molecules such as nutrients, gases, and drugs in environments or organisms; researchers estimate it from the size of a biological pool and its input or output flux, or measure it by tracking labeled tracers over time. Residence-time measurements clarify nutrient cycling, carbon turnover, pollutant persistence, and drug disposition, helping scientists compare ecosystem processes, identify limiting pathways, and predict how biological systems respond to environmental or physiological change.

Noncompartmental Analysis: Mean Residence Time

2025

According to statistical moment theory, mean residence time (MRT) is an important measure in pharmacokinetics. MRT can be defined as the expected mean of a probability density function distribution. It provides valuable insights into drug disposition in the body. After the administration of a drug through intravenous bolus injection, the drug molecules are distributed throughout the body and remain there for varying periods. The MRT represents the average time these drug molecules stay in the...

This video shows the resident-intruder paradigm in rats. This test is a standardized method to measure offensive aggression, defensive behavior and violence in a semi-natural setting. The use of the paradigm for social stress experiments is explained as well.

In Vitro Resident Memory CD8 T Cell Differentiation Using Epithelial Organoid-T Cell Co-culture System

2026

To study CD8 T cell differentiation and function in vitro, CD8 T cells can be isolated from the mouse to be co-cultured long-term with preformed infected murine vaginal epithelial organoids. Here, we describe this process and assess the acquisition of resident memory T cell markers upon co-culture.
