Residual Activity Measurement

Residual activity measurement is a quantitative method for determining how much biological function remains after a cell, enzyme, microorganism, or biological material experiences a treatment or condition. In enzyme studies, researchers measure the treated sample’s ability to convert a defined substrate under controlled conditions and compare the resulting activity with an untreated control, often expressing the result as a percentage of initial activity. This approach helps evaluate enzyme stability, thermal or chemical inactivation, inhibitor effects, and recovery after processing. In biology, residual activity measurements support protein characterization, antimicrobial research, bioprocess optimization, and assessment of how experimental conditions alter biological performance.

Residual Stresses

2024

Residual stresses reside in a structure even after removing the original stress inducer. This phenomenon often arises from varied plastic deformations across different parts of a structure. Consider a rod stretched beyond its yield point. It will not regain its original length due to permanent deformation. Even after load removal, the rod does not entirely lose stress because of uneven plastic deformations, resulting in residual stresses. The computation of these stresses in structures is...

Residual Plots

A residual plot is a statistical representation of data used to analyze correlation and regression results. It helps verify the requirements for drawing specific conclusions about correlation and regression. To obtain the residual plot, first, the residual for each data value is calculated, which is simply the vertical distance between the observed and the predicted value obtained from the regression equation. When the residual values are plotted against the variable x, it is called a residual...

2015

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.
