Sexing Marker

A sexing marker is a genetic or molecular feature used to identify an organism’s sex when external traits are absent, ambiguous, or difficult to observe. In biology, researchers typically analyze DNA sequences linked to sex chromosomes or sex-determining regions, often using PCR to amplify a marker and distinguish sex-specific bands or alleles through electrophoresis. Sexing markers support studies of sex determination, population structure, inheritance, and development, while also improving applications such as breeding programs, wildlife management, and conservation genetics. Their accuracy depends on validating the marker across the target species, population, and developmental stage.

Astrocytes are one of the most important key players in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we are reporting a practical method of sexed hippocampal astrocyte culture protocol in order to study the mechanisms underlying the astrocyte function in male and female neonate pups after in-vitro ischemia.

Sex Stratified Neuronal Cultures to Study Ischemic Cell Death Pathways

Primary disassociated embryonic hippocampal neuronal cultures are useful for investigating the signaling mechanisms involved in neuron death. Sexing the embryos before the isolation and dissociation of the hippocampus allows the preparation of separate male and female cultures, which enables the researcher to identify and investigate sex-specific cell signaling.

Sex-linked Disorders

2026

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.Y chromosome mutations are called “Y-linked” and only affect males since they alone carry a copy of that chromosome. Mutations to the relatively small Y chromosome can impact male sexual function and secondary sex characteristics. Y-chromosome infertility is a disorder that affects sperm...
