Short Hairpin Rna

Short hairpin RNA (shRNA) is a synthetic RNA molecule that forms a tight hairpin structure and is used to reduce expression of a selected gene through RNA interference. After delivery into a cell, shRNA is processed into small interfering RNA, which associates with the RNA-induced silencing complex and guides it to complementary messenger RNA for cleavage or translational repression. Researchers use shRNA vectors to produce sustained gene knockdown in cultured cells, animal models, and functional genomics studies. This approach helps investigate gene function and disease mechanisms and can support the evaluation of potential therapeutic targets.

RNA Interference

2019

RNA interference (RNAi) is a process in which a small non-coding RNA molecule blocks the post-transcriptional expression of a gene by binding to its messenger RNA (mRNA) and preventing the protein from being translated. This process occurs naturally in cells, often through the activity of genomically-encoded microRNAs. Researchers can take advantage of this mechanism by introducing synthetic RNAs to deactivate specific genes for research or therapeutic purposes. For example, RNAi could be used...
