Sieve Tube Elements

Sieve tube elements are specialized living cells of the phloem that form the main conduits for transporting sugars and other organic solutes through vascular plants. At maturity, they lose their nucleus and most organelles, remain connected end to end by perforated sieve plates, and rely on adjacent companion cells for metabolic support; pressure differences between source tissues and sink tissues drive mass flow through the sieve tube. Their structure enables long-distance translocation from photosynthetic leaves to roots, fruits, seeds, and growing regions, making them central to plant growth, storage, signaling, and responses to phloem-feeding pests.

Electrical Penetration Graph (EPG) is a well-established technique for studying the feeding behavior of stylet-bearing insects. Here we show a new application of EPG as a non-invasive tool for the acquisition of intracellular electrophysiology recordings of sieve elements (SEs), the cells that form the phloem vasculature in plants.

Finite Element Modeling for the Simulation of the Quasi-Static Compression of Corrugated Tapered Tubes

This protocol describes the study of the quasi-static compression performance of corrugated tapered tubes using finite element simulations. The influence of the thickness gradient on the compression performance was investigated. The results show that proper thickness gradient design can change the deformation mode and significantly improve the energy absorption performance of the tubes.

Periodic Classification of the Elements

2020

The periodic table arranges atoms based on increasing atomic number so that elements with the same chemical properties recur periodically. When their electron configurations are added to the table, a periodic recurrence of similar electron configurations in the outer shells of these elements is observed. Because they are in the outer shells of an atom, valence electrons play the most important role in chemical reactions. The outer electrons have the highest energy of the electrons in an atom...

Sieve Analysis and Grading Curves

Sieve analysis is a method used to determine the particle size distribution of aggregate materials. This process involves the following steps: The required quantity of dried sample of aggregate is weighed. The weighed aggregates are sieved through a set of sieves with square openings arranged in descending order of aperture size, with the largest mesh on top (Column 1 of Table 1). The stack of sieves is shaken or vibrated to facilitate the sorting of particles by size. After sieving for a...

Classification of Elements and Compounds

Pure substances consist of only one type of matter. A pure substance can be an element or a compound. An element consists of only one type of atom, while a compound consists of two or more types of atoms held together by a chemical bond. Elements are classified as atomic or molecular based on the nature of their basic units. Compounds are pure substances composed of two or more elements in fixed, definite proportions. Compounds are classified as ionic or molecular (covalent) based on the bonds...
