Simple Squamous Epithelium

Simple squamous epithelium is a thin epithelial tissue composed of a single layer of flattened cells, forming low-resistance surfaces where rapid exchange or smooth lining is important. Its minimal thickness shortens the distance for diffusion, while closely arranged cells joined by specialized cell contacts create a selective barrier that regulates movement of gases, nutrients, fluids, and waste products between adjacent compartments. In biology, this tissue supports gas exchange in alveoli, filtration and exchange in parts of the kidney and circulatory system, and friction reduction on serous membranes; its structure-function relationship also helps researchers interpret normal histology and recognize changes associated with injury or disease.

Classification of Epithelial Tissues: Simple Epithelium

Simple epithelium consists of a single layer of cells that lines body cavities and blood vessels. The shape of the cells in the epithelium reflects the function of the tissue. Cells in simple squamous epithelium appear as thin scales with flat, elliptical nuclei that mirror the form of the cell. Because of the thinness of the cells, simple squamous epithelium is present where the rapid passage of chemical compounds is observed. For example, the endothelium that lines the capillaries and vessels...

Perineural invasion (PNI) is a common feature of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), conferring lower survival rates. Its mechanisms are poorly understood. Utilizing neurites generated from murine dorsal root ganglia confined to a semisolid matrix, the pathways involved in the PNI of HNSCC cell lines can be investigated.

Distillation of a Miscible Mixture Some liquids will evaporate entirely over time if left in an open container at room temperature. However, this evaporation process can be significantly accelerated if the liquid is heated. As the liquid is heated, the molecules within it gain the energy to escape the liquid phase and transition into the gas phase in the form of bubbles. This phenomenon is called boiling. Vapor Pressure Consider a closed container of liquid. Initially, some of this liquid...
