Skin Epidermal Renewal

Skin epidermal renewal is the continuous biological process that replaces aging or damaged epidermal cells, preserving the skin’s protective barrier. It begins when keratinocytes in the basal layer divide, then migrate toward the surface while undergoing differentiation, accumulating keratin, and eventually shedding from the stratum corneum; coordinated proliferation, maturation, and desquamation maintain tissue thickness. This renewal process supports barrier function, water retention, and defense against environmental stress. Studying epidermal renewal helps explain wound healing, skin aging, inflammatory disorders, and the effects of topical treatments, while providing a foundation for research in tissue repair, dermatology, and regenerative biology.

Renewal of Skin Epidermal Stem Cells

2023

The skin is divided into epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, the skin's outermost, middle, and inner layers. The human epidermal layer regularly undergoes renewal, where old, dead cells are replaced by new cells. Epidermal stem cells or EpiSCs divide and differentiate to restore the lost cells. For the renewal process, some EpiSCs continuously self-renew. In contrast, few others differentiate into transit-amplifying cells, which later form prickle or spinous cells, followed by granular cells,...
