Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are conditions that disrupt the timing, duration, quality, or regulation of sleep, making them important for understanding how sleep supports biological function and health. They can arise when circadian rhythms become misaligned, neural pathways controlling sleep and wakefulness are altered, or breathing and muscle activity repeatedly interrupt normal sleep cycles. In biology, studying sleep disorders helps researchers connect brain activity, hormones, metabolism, and behavior with disease mechanisms and identify measurable patterns through sleep histories, physiological monitoring, and laboratory studies. This work informs diagnosis, treatment development, and research on how restoring healthy sleep may improve whole-body function.

REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the absence of muscle paralysis that normally occurs during the REM phase of sleep. This absence allows individuals to physically act out their dreams, which are often vivid and disturbing. Common behaviors exhibited during episodes include kicking, punching, and yelling. These actions can be dangerous, potentially leading to injuries for the person with RBD or their bed partner. RBD is significantly associated with...
