Spatial Frequency Testing

Spatial frequency testing is a method for measuring how well a visual system detects patterns that differ in the fineness of their detail, an important indicator of sensory function in biology. In a typical test, an observer views gratings or other patterned stimuli while their spatial frequency, measured as cycles per degree of visual angle, and contrast are varied to determine the minimum detectable contrast across frequencies. The resulting contrast sensitivity function shows which spatial scales the eye and brain process most effectively. This approach supports studies of vision, retinal and neural development, aging, and visual disorders, and helps evaluate changes in biological function.

Spatial Memory Testing Using Mazes

2023

Spatial learning and memory are neurological functions that allow us to remember important details associated with our environment. Scientists test this phenomenon in rodents using different types of mazes like Morris water maze, Radial water maze, and Barnes maze. By investigating spatial memory in rodents, neurobehavioral scientists can gain valuable understanding of how these processes are altered following brain damage in humans. Here, the neurobiology behind spatial memory is briefly...

Expected Frequencies in Goodness-of-Fit Tests

2023

A goodness-of-fit test is conducted to determine whether the observed frequency values are statistically similar to the frequencies expected for the dataset. Suppose the expected frequencies for a dataset are equal such as when predicting the frequency of any number appearing when casting a die. In that case, the expected frequency is the ratio of the total number of observations (n) to the number of categories (k). Hence, the expected frequency of any number appearing when casting a die will...

2018

We present a protocol to explore the relationship between spatial language production, spatial memory, and object knowledge. The procedure allows experimental manipulation of, and control over, conditions of object knowledge, language at instruction, and physical location, thus teasing apart cognitive and linguistic models describing interactions between these variables.
