Structural Similarity

Structural similarity is the degree to which two or more objects share comparable form, organization, or spatial arrangement, a concept used to relate biological structures across scales. In biology, researchers evaluate it by aligning corresponding anatomical parts, cellular features, or molecular structures and measuring similarities in shape, composition, and three-dimensional configuration, even when their sequences or surface details differ. These comparisons help identify potentially homologous features, infer evolutionary relationships, predict molecular function, classify organisms, and assess structural changes associated with disease or treatment. Structural similarity therefore connects physical architecture with biological function and evolutionary history.

The similarity-dissimilarity effect, a fundamental concept in social psychology, explains how interpersonal similarities and differences influence attraction and social interactions. This effect is supported by three key psychological perspectives: balance theory, social comparison theory, and consensual validation.Balance Theory and Cognitive ConsistencyBalance theory, developed by Fritz Heider, posits that individuals seek cognitive consistency in their relationships. When two people share...

Factors Influencing Attraction III: Similarity

2025

The similarity hypothesis suggests that individuals are more likely to form relationships with others who share similar attitudes, beliefs, values, and interests. This concept has been widely studied in social psychology, demonstrating that perceived similarity fosters interpersonal attraction. In an experiment supporting this hypothesis, participants were presented with fabricated information indicating that strangers held attitudes similar to their own. The results showed that participants...

Guidelines for computer based structural and functional characterization of protein using the I-TASSER pipeline is described. Starting from query protein sequence, 3D models are generated using multiple threading alignments and iterative structural assembly simulations. Functional inferences are thereafter drawn based on matches to proteins with known structure and functions.
