Sucrose Solution

A sucrose solution is a homogeneous mixture of sucrose dissolved in water, widely used in biology to control solute concentration and water availability. Because sucrose does not readily cross many biological membranes, it lowers the solution’s water potential and drives osmosis, causing water to move across a selectively permeable membrane toward the higher solute concentration. Researchers use sucrose solutions to study osmotic behavior in cells and plant tissues, prepare density gradients for separating cell components, and maintain suitable conditions during laboratory procedures. Its adjustable concentration makes it a practical model for investigating membrane transport, cell volume, and physiological responses.

Liquid Phase Reactor: Sucrose Inversion

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Both batch and continuous flow reactors are used in catalytic reactions. Packed beds, which use solid catalysts and a continuous flow, are the most common configuration. In the absence of an extensive recycle stream, such packed bed reactors are typically modeled as "plug flow". The other most common continuous reactor is a stirred tank, which is assumed to be perfectly...

Purification of Bacteriophages Using a Sucrose Density Gradient

Source: Rustad, M., et.al. Synthesis of Infectious Bacteriophages in an E. coli-based Cell-free Expression System. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the purification of bacteriophages from a suspension containing host bacterial debris using a sucrose density gradient. It shows how the density gradient separates phages by buoyant density, enabling recovery of a visible band for resuspension and further analysis.

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Michael Evans — Georgia Institute of Technology A solution is a homogeneous mixture containing some components in small amounts, called solutes, and one component in a large amount, called the solvent. Solid-liquid solutions contain one or more solid solutes dissolved in a liquid solvent. Solutions are ubiquitous in chemistry: they are used to store and handle small amounts of material, carry out chemical reactions, and develop materials with controllable properties.

General Properties of Solutions

Many common substances around us exist as a solution, such as ocean water, air, and gasoline. All solutions are mixtures of substances that are composed of varying amounts of two or more types of atoms or molecules. A mixture with a non-uniform composition is a heterogeneous mixture, whereas a mixture with a uniform composition is a homogeneous mixture. The components that make the homogeneous mixture are evenly spread out and thoroughly mixed. A solution is a homogeneous mixture that is...
