Surfactant Screening

Surfactant screening is the systematic evaluation of surface-active compounds to identify formulations with suitable physicochemical and biological properties. These amphiphilic molecules contain hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions; they accumulate at interfaces, lower surface tension, and can assemble into micelles above the critical micelle concentration, enabling controlled interactions with membranes, proteins, or other biomolecules. In biology, screening helps compare surfactants for cell lysis, membrane permeabilization, protein solubilization, drug delivery, and assay development, while revealing concentrations that preserve target activity and limit cellular damage. Results guide reagent selection and formulation design in research and biotechnology.

Lavage-induced Surfactant Depletion in Pigs As a Model of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

2016

Repeated pulmonary lavages in anesthetized pigs induce lung injury resembling major aspects of human acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). For this purpose the lungs are repeatedly lavaged with 0.9% saline at 37 °C. The goal of the protocol is a reproducible mitigation of gas exchange and hemodynamics for research in ARDS.

Experimental Measurement of Settling Velocity of Spherical Particles in Unconfined and Confined Surfactant-based Shear Thinning Viscoelastic Fluids

This paper demonstrates the experimental procedure to measure terminal settling velocities of spherical particles in surfactant-based shear thinning viscoelastic fluids. Fluids over a wide range of rheological properties are prepared and settling velocities are measured for a range of particle sizes in unbounded fluids and fluids between parallel walls.

Genetic Screens

2023

Genetic screens are critical tools for defining gene function and understanding gene interactions. Screens typically involve mutating genes and then assessing the affected organisms for phenotypes of interest. The process can be “forward”, where mutations are generated randomly to identify unknown genes responsible for the phenotypes, or it can be “reverse”, where specific genes are targeted for mutation to observe what phenotypes are produced. Here, JoVE reviews various types of genetic...
