Systematic Sampling

Systematic sampling is a probability-based method for selecting observations at regular intervals from an ordered population, providing an efficient alternative to simple random sampling. In biology, researchers first define the sampling frame, choose a random starting point, and then select every kth individual, specimen, or location, where k is determined by the population size and desired sample size. This approach can efficiently assess plant abundance, microbial distributions, tissue sections, or ecological transects while spreading samples across the study area. Its reliability depends on a representative sampling frame and attention to hidden periodic patterns that could bias the results.
